If you've experienced it for yourself, there's no need to explain the overwhelming relief that comes from cold plunging. The first 30 seconds are a challenge indeed. But that after-plunge high is something to behold… Your mind is clear and humming with oxygen, as your skin tightens you feel trim, tight and powerful, and any aches or pains you had before have simply melted away. Not to mention the stress… "What was I stressed about again? How ridiculous!" You simply feel invincible. The question is: Why? We have answers… - Deliberate cold exposure (defined as submersion up to the neck in water colder than 55 degrees Fahrenheit for at least 3 minutes) constricts blood vessels, which reduces blood flow to areas of inflammation during (and 1-2 hours after) cold therapy. This constriction of blood to already-inflamed areas is what relieves pain more immediately.
- The long term effect on inflammation comes from enhanced circulation over time. You can think of cold therapy (at least in part) like training your circulatory system—the stronger it gets, the better your overall blood flow, the better your overall blood flow, the better everything else gets (including your body's ability to heal). Poor circulation can lead to endless problems in the body (stagnation is perhaps the body's greatest enemy). Achieving the opposite (optimal circulation) means your body can transport oxygen, nutrients, and other key building blocks for natural processes more effectively. The result? Reduced long term inflammation, and improved rate (and depth) of healing.
- Cold Shock Proteins: CSPs are special proteins released by your liver under extreme cold conditions to help your body adapt. You can think of CSPs like your body's built-in "steroid"—they supercharge cellular function, accelerate soft tissue healing, improve glucose utilization, increase muscle-protein synthesis, fortify the immune system, protect the brain from damage and help it form new neural connections… The benefits of CSP's seem to be nearly limitless, but their effect on soft tissue healing and inflammation is profound. And the only way to unlock the endless benefits of CSPs is to get in the cold.
Now you know why deliberate cold exposure is your new best friend when it comes to inflammation and healing. Outside of steroids and expensive hyperbaric therapies, there is little else on earth that yields a similar impact on inflammation and soft tissue healing (not to mention all the other benefits). | | We hope you enjoyed this mini-guide on cold therapy and inflammation!
