It's not novel information that world-famous Podcast host, UFC commentary expert, and Netflix comic sensation Joe Rogan is a fanatic for cold plunging. The question is, why? Better yet, what's his routine? Join us for a plunge into Joe Rogan's cold therapy philosophy and daily regimen. 4 Reasons Joe Rogan Doesn't Go Without Cold Plunging... - Enduring discomfort makes you unstoppable… For Joe, the health benefits of cold plunging are just one perk. What comes first is knowing, "if I can endure this discomfort, I can conquer anything that comes my way." It sounds ethereal, but it's quite real—many regular practitioners of cold-plunging report feeling more in control of their day, less bothered by normal anxieties, and less fearful of big, audacious goals.
- Cold keeps you sharp, calm, and clear… Nothing can quite literally cut through brain fog like getting into ice cold water. When the body encounters cold water, it sends a signal to the brain to divert blood out of the peripheries (hands, feet, arms, legs) and directly to the core & up to the brain. It does this to protect vital organs from the cold, but the result is a rush of oxygen to the brain that cuts through brain fog and accelerates cognition unlike anything else.
- Try being in a bad mood after a cold plunge… Similar to how cold clears out brain fog and accelerates cognition from directing oxygen to the brain, the sudden flood of oxygen to the entire system has also been shown to improve mood, relieve feelings of anxiety, and stimulate a positive, long-lasting dopamine response. As Joe would say, "the more it sucks, the better you feel!"
- Defy inflammation & recover at lightspeed… During the cold plunge, your blood vessels constrict (especially in your peripheries), sending blood to the core. The long term compounding effect of cold plunging however is vasodilation and improved nitric oxide production. Better blood flow means the body can transport oxygen more efficiently to where it's needed. The result? Less inflammation & lightspeed recovery (compared to baseline).
Joe's Cold Plunge Routine - Joe likes his cold plunges cold—"34 degrees does the body good!" At minimum, Joe keeps his cold plunge no warmer than 50°F (10°C). His "sweet spot" tends to be 34-40°F.
- His tempo is typically daily, for at least 3 minutes, generally coupled with a sauna session beforehand (sometimes cycling back-and-forth for 2-3 rounds).
- For an extra challenge, Joe will occasionally test his limits, going as long as (and occasionally past) as much as 10 minutes (not advised for those not cold-adapted)
- Joe typically hits the plunge first thing in the morning, before his workouts, reporting the noticeable impact it has to his endurance, reduced pain and inflammation throughout his workout, and improved recovery thereafter.
Perhaps it's a coincidence… That some of the world's top-performers—from athletes, to movie stars, and many indomitable figures in-between—happen to attribute cold plunging (at least in-part) to their ongoing success. Perhaps it's a coincidence that seemingly no-one in the upper echelon of their personal potential reports anything less than extraordinary benefits from dancing with the cold. Perhaps it's a coincidence that cold plunging has become one of the most discussed, debated, and disruptive movements in the modern world… Or perhaps… cold plunging really is a not-so-secret hack to unlocking unstoppable human potential. | | | | |
