This last year we got the same question several times over.
"I thought you guys were a healthy skincare brand, why are you using PUFAs in your products?"
This prompted us to figure out why people were even asking us this. After all, we take our ingredient selection seriously.
PUFA is short for polyunsaturated fatty acid, and there are a lot of them in Blissoma skincare. Most plant based oils are rich in PUFAs. The alternative is saturated fatty acids, which appear in coconut oil, palm oil, tallow, and lard.
It turns out this whole issue started because of conflicting information about how healthy it may or may not be to eat PUFAs in food.
For years governmental food and health groups were urging people to eat less saturated fats and to switch to plant based, PUFA rich oils because they were shown to lower cholesterol.
Now (as things tend to go in the dietary field) new information is coming out showing that there can be some unintended side effects of leaning food consumption so heavily towards PUFAs, and that consumption of saturated fats may not be so bad after all.
There are a lot of persnickety details about this debate in the food field, and we're going to largely leave that matter to folks whose expertise is internal health, other than to say that a lot of the problem may revolve around the overuse of oils that skew our omega-6 ratio out of whack, and that are poor quality, overheated, partially rancid, or just refined and devoid of nutrition.
Our specialty at Blissoma is skin.
So we asked for the links to the articles that our customers had read, we reviewed them, and we have a lot to say about this issue.
You're going to want to read our blog article that resulted from these queries.
It relies directly on scientific research, not rumors.
So the next time someone brings up PUFAs you'll have solid info to share.
We love getting your questions, and are always excited to research and respond.
Happy reading!
