There's treasure under the ground... Stories of buried treasure usually relate to pirate gold, maybe dinosaur bones, or possibly a lost archeological wonder. What we're talking about today, though, is roots. They're both common and typically out of our sight, so it's easy to overlook how amazing they are. Leaves and pretty blossoms? Only possible because of roots. Roots store a different range of nutrients than other plant parts, and that's why they're super valuable for skin health. | | Let's be real, one of the reasons that roots don't get prime placement in skincare marketing is because....well... they look kinda messy and dirty. They're not romantic like a rose, or cute like a mushroom. But roots are truly the unsung heroes of herbal skin health. Many roots are harvested in fall after the plant has spent all season growing, making energy, and storing it for winter. All that energy and nutrition turns into assistance for your skin. | | Every plant has unique chemistry, but there are 2 types of compounds that are very commonly found in roots: - Minerals
- Complex Polysaccharides (sugars)
| | Let's chat first about minerals. Roots contain a lot of minerals because they grow directly in the soil. Minerals are also often a vital part of cell communication, differentiation, and barrier function in skin. Healthy skin contains ionic minerals like sulfur, sodium, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and zinc. Most of your skin minerals are found in the lower, living layers of skin. ( source) Cells can't grow and function well without minerals. Our diets are now chronically deficient in minerals, and most fruits and vegetables are something like 20% - 75% lower in crucial minerals than they used to be before 1940. ( source) This is because of the modern preference for farming high yield plants bred for production and grocery store stability, and depleting our soil through factory farming practices that don't focus on soil health. Even if you eat a diet that's rich in whole foods you're unfortunately still probably lacking critical minerals. Roots from regeneratively grown medicinal herbs offer you a fantastic and easy way to restore minerals to your skin. | | Roots from Burdock, Dandelion, and Butcher's Broom are great for replenishing your skin's minerals. Since minerals are very much needed in the living skin layers it's great to drink these herbs as teas as well as using them in skincare. | | And what about those polysaccharides? They're fun and "complex" enough that they deserve an email all their own. (That's an herbalist joke 🌱🤓) We'll follow up tomorrow with more about root nutrients. In the meantime you can enrich your skin with minerals using these Blissoma skincare products: | | | | Intense - Ion Hydration Tonique |
