In this week's newsletter, we are dedicated to solving 2 camping problems, and giving one hack to help make your trip a whole lot more enjoyable! This week: - Bugs - How to Limit, if not Eliminate, the Issue
- Staking the Tent on Difficult Ground
Plus: A pro tip for the 'best camp-cooking strategy' book Bugs and mosquitos. Not to mention bigger visitors. They are simply my biggest pet hate when camping. They can potentially ruin a whole camping trip if not planned for. I have nothing against little critters. I just prefer not to have to share my dinner with them at night. So, here are the best things to keep them at a safe distance!

Bugs - How to Limit, if not Eliminate, the Issue
| | 1. Bug Sprays They work. With DEET ideally. I know some of the PR around these sprays hasn't been fantastic, with some reporting skin irritation etc, but they do work and can be applied to clothes rather than skin. | | | | |
2. Natural Repellent If chemicals aren't your thinking then natural homemade repellents can be made. And again, can be sprayed on clothes rather than skin. These can be composed of: Thyme, Eucalyptus, Cedarwood, Sage, Catnip, Geranium, Lemongrass, Rosemary, Tea Tree, Cajeput, Lavender, Mint, Basil, Citronella, Clove >>> Mix these in a spray bottle along with a tablespoon of rubbing alcohol, half a cup of natural witch hazel and half a cup of water. Give your bottle a good shake before spraying, as the oil and water mixture will always tend to separate. This concoction offers a natural way to keep those critters away while you're camping. Depending on which oils you use, you may enjoy the scent, too.
3. Bug Repelling Diffusers, Coils and Bracelets These are readily available and they all work. Diffusers provide up-to 100% protections against mosquitoes, and usually include a small fan. Coils emit a repelling scent, along with smoke. And bracelets create a shield, and can be a good option for kids.
4. Campfire, Lanterns and Candles Campfires are probably the best way of keeping bugs away. Just note the wind direction. Citronella candles are a must for camping trips, and bug repellent lanterns now also exist and work pretty well.
5. Mesh Rooms and Keep Bug Nets Closed Bug Free mesh rooms are a really popular way of keeping the little guys out, while eating or reading in peace, also while taking in the scenery. They aren't expensive and may be well worth bringing along. Plus, make sure your tent has bug mesh across the doors and windows - and keep it closed! This also helps to keep the bigger critters out!
6. Plan Read reviews and see what others had to say about the area you're going to and its bugs and wildlife. Preparation trumps.
Staking the Tent on Difficult Ground | | How the hell can I stake my tent down on very hard or very loose ground?
A common problem. Firstly loose ground such as sand or loose earth. There are specific stakes for that which are wider and sit more securely in loose earth or sand. Two other alternatives are sandbags - but make sure they are big enough to work. And weights - either that you bring along, or can source at the site - e.g. large stones. If the ground is too hard for regular stakes then the same applies - either you will need sandbags or weights. This is important. And always watch the weather forecast.
Pro Tip - Camp Cooking We've all been in the place where we run to the supermarket before a camping trip, and arrive at the site completely flummoxed about what to prepare - especially for a family. So, I have one word for you: Plan. Or specifically, plan ahead at home. It's by far the best way to enjoy the outdoors cooking experience. Get a spreadsheet together, and make sure you think it through by meal, and add snacks. It's the best way to avoid the missing spoon, or worse still - coffee! And also reduces waste enormously. So plan, plan, plan for meals. It can also be fun to do with the kids...
