From John Danaher:
The ankle lock is one of the most devastating of the major leg locks in Jiu Jitsu. It has several important advantages over other methods. The gripping methods that underlie it are typically more robust than those used for heel hooks and toe holds. Many of the standard defenses to other leg locks lead directly into success for ankle locks.
It is a lock that is legal in almost all rule sets and belt levels, so it has wider application than most leg locks. For many years it was dismissed as a move that was “just a pain move” “but doesn’t do any real damage.” Done properly it is as devastating as any other leg locks and often requires fewer prerequisite controls to make application easier for many students.
In this video we look at how to organize skills around setting a devastating grip and how to balance that against the demand to create a powerful and controlling opposing force with your legs.
As always the heart of the video is a serious look at how to manage and overcome resistance by a skilled opponent by furnishing cues that build anticipation and decision skills that enable you to understand what’s happening and what’s important in a dynamic leg locking situation, so that you can control and submit an opponent over time through dynamic movement.
