KEY MOMENTS

Speaking on the POLITICO stage, New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin backed a tax hike to fund universal child care in the upcoming state budget process, putting her weight behind a proposal that Mayor Zohran Mamdani is also expected to pursue.

Meanwhile, New York City Comptroller Mark Levine warned the government is “not well defended against the agent-driven cyber threats that are coming.” And Menin urged the mayor to hire an AI czar because the federal government isn’t moving to regulate.

Anthony Shorris, the head of the city’s Economic Development Corporation, told the crowd the Mamdani administration will pursue “several interventions” where they see “failures” in existing markets, from financing to affordable housing insurance.

And Jed Walentas, chair of the Real Estate Board of New York, called assertions that real estate developers have made too much money “part true,” while defending programs that incentivize them to build more housing — a critical need to confront the city’s affordability crisis.

State Sen. Erik Bottcher, NYC Democratic Socialists of America Co-Chair Grace Mausser and Citizens Budget Commission President Andrew Rein also joined the event to discuss the mayor’s affordability agenda. And Partnership for NYC CEO Steven Fulop and Charles H. Revson Foundation President Maria Torres-Springer unpacked the city’s economic headwinds.
