GOOD SUNDAY MORNING. President DONALD TRUMP will visit Kenosha, Wis., on Tuesday to "meet with law enforcement and survey damage from recent riots." NYT'S KATIE GLUECK and SYDNEY EMBER reported that JOE BIDEN is expected "to travel on Monday to condemn violence, and to note that chaos has unfolded on Mr. Trump's watch." THE BIDEN CAMPAIGN didn't have any details on his schedule as of publication time -- including whether or not BIDEN was expected in Kenosha on Monday. THE PRESIDENT is at his golf course in Virginia today, per pooler DAVID NAKAMURA of the WASHINGTON POST. SENDING A MESSAGE TO TEAM BIDEN … REP. CEDRIC RICHMOND (D-La.) -- a top adviser to BIDEN -- to CHUCK TODD on NBC'S "MEET THE PRESS": TODD: "The last, you and I -- the last time you and I spoke we talked about -- you told me you thought the Democrats hadn't done a good enough job reminding people where the economy was in 2016, reminding people of the economy that Donald Trump inherited. At the time, this was before, this was before the, the two big speeches. You saw what the RNC is pushing when it comes to the economy. Do you think Democrats have done any better of a job since we last talked about, about reframing where the economy was in 2016? RICHMOND: "Well, I think, a little bit of that has happened. I think a lot more has to happen after Labor Day. We have to make it very clear to people that this president has the worst job creation record under any president in United States history. He's lost six million jobs. The Obama-Biden era created 16 million jobs coming out of the Great Recession. This president just does not have an economic plan, and I think Democrats have to hone in on that. "THE ONE THING Trump does very well is says the same thing over and over again. Most of the time it's a lie, but he says it over and over again and people start to believe it. We have to continue to say over and over again that this president has destroyed and wrecked this economy, just like everything he has ever touched in his life. And so we need to point out that there are farmers that are filing bankruptcy at all-time highs, that the unemployment numbers are where they are, small businesses are closing their doors every day. And so yeah, it's incumbent upon us to keep reminding people of that." SNEAK PEEK … THE PRESIDENT'S WEEK AHEAD: Monday: TRUMP will have lunch with VP MIKE PENCE and will meet with Attorney General BILL BARR and acting DHS Secretary CHAD WOLF. Tuesday: TRUMP will travel to Kenosha, Wis. Wednesday: TRUMP will travel to Wilmington, N.C., to speak about "designating Wilmington, NC as an American World War II Heritage City." Thursday: TRUMP will have lunch with Secretary of State MIKE POMPEO. TOP STORY … READ NYT'S MIKE BAKER'S tweet thread from Portland, Ore. … And then read his story: -- "Deadly Shooting in Portland After Pro-Trump Ralliers Clash With Protesters": "A man was shot and killed Saturday as a large group of supporters of President Trump traveled in a caravan through downtown Portland, Ore., which has seen nightly protests for three consecutive months. "The pro-Trump rally drew hundreds of trucks full of supporters into the city. At times, Trump supporters and counterprotesters clashed on the streets, with people shooting paintball guns from the beds of pickup trucks and protesters throwing objects back at them. "A video that purports to be of the shooting, taken from the far side of the street, showed a small group of people in the road outside what appears to be a parking garage. Gunfire erupts, and a man collapses in the street. The man who was shot and killed was wearing a hat with the insignia of Patriot Prayer, a far-right group based in Portland that has clashed with protesters in the past." ACTING DHS SECRETARY CHAD WOLF to MARGARET BRENNAN on CBS'S "FACE THE NATION": BRENNAN: "The president said Friday at his New Hampshire rally that he's been discussing invoking the Insurrection Act to deal with Wisconsin. He's mentioned things about Portland as well. You've been in the room when the president has discussed using the Insurrection Act in the past. Do you support its use now to send in active-duty military to American cities?" WOLF: "Again, I'm not going to get in front of the president on any decisions that he may or may not make, but what I can tell you--" BRENNAN: "I'm not asking about the president's decision. I'm asking if you support?" WOLF: "--is I have been in, I have been in a number of decisions, in a number of meetings where we have addressed and talked about the violence that's going on in a number of cities around this country, including Portland, but also Wisconsin, Chicago, Atlanta and other cities. The president's been very clear. I think he made, very numerous public statements asking state and local officials to do their job--" BRENNAN: "I'm asking if you, if you think it's something you support." WOLF: "-- to do their job and if they can't, request assistance from the federal government. Department of Justice will send assets. The department will send assets if there's federal facilities or federal law enforcement officers being targeted. And we will help them to provide assets and resources that they don't have." BRENNAN: "OK, that sounds like no since that would be seeking consent of the governor and local officials. It sounds like you're saying, no, you don't support the Insurrection Act. If that's not the case, please, clarify. " WOLF: "[W]hat I will tell you is, again, I'm not going to get in front of the president. It's the president's--" BRENNAN: "I'm not asking about the president's decision. I'm asking do you support it." WOLF: "--decision to do the Insurrection Act. What I support is making sure that we bring this violence in a number of these cities around the country to an end." DNI RATCLIFFE SNUBS CONGRESS … CNN'S JAKE TAPPER and ZACHARY COHEN: "Top intelligence office informs congressional committees it'll no longer brief in-person on election security": "The Office of the Director of National Intelligence has informed the House and Senate Select Committees on Intelligence that it'll no longer be briefing in-person on election security issues, according to letters obtained by CNN. Instead, ODNI will primarily provide written updates to the congressional panels, a senior administration official said. "The official added that other agencies supporting election security, including the Department of Justice, Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security, intend to continue briefing Congress. Still, the abrupt announcement is a change that runs counter to the pledge of transparency and regular briefings on election threats by the intelligence community." -- NANCY PELOSI and ADAM SCHIFF statement: "We expect the Administration and Intelligence Community to keep us fully and accurately informed, and resume the briefings. If they are unwilling to, we will consider the full range of tools available to the House to compel compliance." -- ACTING DHS SECRETARY CHAD WOLF said the intelligence community is concerned about "leaks, classified information." -- HOUSE INTELLIGENCE CHAIRMAN ADAM SCHIFF of California to DANA BASH on CNN'S "STATE OF THE UNION" about whether his staff leaked: "I haven't, my staff hasn't -- I can't speak for what all the members of the committee have done or not done, including a lot of the Republican members. Look -- Dana -- leaks are always improper and sometimes they're illegal. But again this is a falsehood -- yet again another lie by the president -- and of course as you point out, it's a logical inconsistency to say we're going to put it on paper so it can't leak rather than speak to the Congress -- that doesn't make any sense." |
