5 Tips for Pitching Your Tent
| | This may seem like a ridiculously obvious piece of advice - but it isn't! Common sense isn't all that common… If you do not find a flat piece of ground to pitch on, you will have an awful night's sleep. Period. Rolling into one side or even corner of a tent, with others rolling into the same coroner, simply sucks. Keep it flat. If you're on a vehicle remember the levelling blocks. If on a trailer make sure it has adjustable stabilizers. And, bring a small spirit level for that 'top notch' rest…

Especially when wild camping. There are a few things to consider:
-
Look Up - any hanging branches or even unstable trees that could fall your way? - Local wildlife - do you need to hang food away from the tent?
- Water - if there is heavy rainfall, can you end up in a river?
- Have you brought along first aid and a fire blanket or even an extinguisher and carbon monoxide alarm?
- Sun protection and insect repellent?
- Get to know your campgrounds' rules and procedures.
- Practice food safety - both packing and preparing
- Use the vents - they're there for a reason

3. Exact Weather Forecast for the Area - and Check More Than One Source
| | Not all weather Apps are equal. This is probably the biggest factor in pitching properly. Need rain clothes, and a second flysheet? Need a mobile A/C for your insulated tent? What kind of bugs will the weather bring? A separate tarp? Size of tent? The weather affects it all. Know what to expect.

2. Use a Footprint and Close Doors Before Staking Your Tent Out
| | The former is an extra groundsheet layer that helps prevent your floor getting punctured by rocks, twigs and the like. It also adds another layer against dampness which helps here in Ireland! The latter is so that the next is in its proper and natural shape before it gets fully staked out. If you don't you may well find yourself unable to close the door after a pristine pitching. PS; stake out properly using all stake points and guy lines, even when it's not windy. You never know when wind speed can rise unexpectedly. And you don't want to be the one that takes off… PPSS; face your door away from the prevailing wind. | | | | |
1. Practice Makes Perfect
| | Don't be that guy that arrives at the site, with his tent still unopened in the box. Make sure it's tested at home first. And, if you're not using a new tent, you should also make sure to pitch it at home first - you don't want any unwelcome historical tears or dampness that you may have missed when packing up last time. Mold is a big no-no. Check first. It's always better. | | | | |
3. Roadtrippers Personally, I absolutely love this. We've all heard it's about the journey, not the destination. And I completely agree. And Roadtrippers is built for exactly that.
