As we hit the middle of August, I'm all for planning how to keep on camping well into the Fall, or Autumn, depending on your side of the Atlantic. In fact, some of my favorite camping experiences have been on the shoulder seasons. So, I've compiled a list of bits and pieces on how to prepare for trips in late August, September and October. Hopefully you'll find it useful.
Fail to prepare then prepare to fail. Or something like that. As usual it's crucial.
| | - Pick your destination carefully & watch out for prevalent weather.
- You might assume that bugs are less active in the Fall, and you could be correct to some degree. But, remember wasps, for instance, can get quite aggressive at that time of year. Check what bugs and wildlife may be active at your destination.
- Can you find a place and time to take advantage of some Fall colors and leaf peeping? It's a thing!
- Checklist - always.
- Can you take advantage of reduced campsite rates after peak season?
| | | | |
- It's likely that the temps will drop, especially at night. So you should consider 3-4 season sleeping systems, and of course, a hard as nails insulated tent! Another shameless plug for CRUA.
- Make sure that the sleep system includes a damn well insulated pad.
- Test first.. Don't arrive with the equipment still in the box!
- Layers. Layers. Layers. For night and day.
- Gloves or mittens.
- Hip flask!!!
- Make sure you prep for rain. It's likely.
| | | | |
- Find a nice sheltered spot, being mindful of the prevailing weather
- Use a tarp to cover everything.
- And remember the wind can show up unexpectedly. Stake your tent properly and face it appropriately.
- Remember you will have less light and plan appropriately - headlamps and string lights for example.
| | | | |
- Make sure to have insulated mugs etc. Things get cold quicker.
- If possible bring ready cooked or at least easy dishes in case the weather turns. It also helps as cooking outdoors takes longer when cooler.
- Hydrate - even if it's not very hot - you are sweating.

- Be mindful of the weather forecast , as well as unexpected phenomenon.
- Make sure to plan for wildlife and wildlife Fall rituals.
- If all else fails, plan B! If the weather concerns, and I don't say this likely, find alternative accommodation!
- Look up - any loose branches?
- Use common sense.
- Remember that there will still most likely be sunshine. Sunscreen.

Just because it's autumn doesn't mean we have to stop camping. It just means we need to plan accordingly. - Derek
