Today, we're sharing the results of an interesting new study about peanut butter. And it just so happens, peanut butter is one of my favorite foods. It sustained me for years of school lunches, and I still lean on a slice of sourdough toast with pb as a regular (and filling) snack.
What's one food that's been a staple in your diet? Let me know by replying to this email! | | —Molly Knudsen, M.S., RDN, editor | | | | | An unexpected benefit of peanut butter While peanut butter makes a creamy, satisfying snack, it can also support muscle power (according to a new study).
For this clinical trial, researchers randomly assigned 120 adults ages 65+ (who are at high-risk for falls) to add 3 tablespoons of pb daily to their diet or follow their typical diet for 6 months.¹ 10 grams of protein and 4 grams of fiber. - Walking speed, balance, strength, and body composition were all measured.
The key difference? Those eating pb had a: - Faster sit-to-stand time (a marker of leg strength and power).
- Higher muscle power during the movement.
- Interestingly, participants didn't gain weight despite adding ~250 calories daily (pb is a high-fat food and that is a significant calorie increase).
Why this matters: Muscle power helps with everyday tasks like standing up, catching yourself from a stumble, or climbing stairs. - It also declines earlier than strength as we age.
Why peanut butter? It delivers protein (~12 grams per the serving used), healthy unsaturated fats, magnesium, and antioxidants. - All of these nutrients support muscle function and help counter age-related muscle loss.
+ Fill up p.s. All natural nut and seed butters (ones that just include nut and salt) offer a mix of protein, healthy fats, and micronutrients. So choose which one you like best or mix it up! | | | | | | PRESENTED BY | | | | Major study finds this supports cardiovascular function* | | | | If you hear that cocoa is good for you, cocoa flavanols are the reason. Research continually shows these bioactive compounds are shown to support healthy aging.* The problem is flavanol levels are not labeled and can vary greatly in cocoa-based foods.
CocoaVia 500mg Cocoa Flavanols Powder uses clinically proven levels of Cocoapro™, a cocoa extract that's 24 times more concentrated than natural cocoa powders.
Here's what that means for your heart health: - Improved circulation and blood flow throughout the body within 2 hours*
- This supports vascular function, helping retain healthy blood pressure & cholesterol levels*
In fact, a landmark COSMOS study—with over 21,000 older adults studied over 5 years—found that cocoa flavanols improved several long-term cardiovascular measures. The cocoa flavanol extract used in COSMOS is the same extract and level of cocoa flavanols in CocoaVia's 500mg Cocoa Flavanol Powder.*²
+Your daily fix of cocoa flavonols | | | | | | | | | | Smoothies rarely made an appearance on my weekly menu during this winter (it was freezing and I couldn't take any unnecessary cold!). With more sunny, warm days on the horizon, I'm feeling ready to welcome refreshing smoothies back into my weekly menu, and I hope you're ready to do the same. They're such a great way to get heaps of fruits, veggies, and even 25+ grams of protein (with the right ingredients!) in one fell swoop.
+Blended | | | | | | | | Your new favorite daily habit — delicious & no added sugar | | | | Get the delicious, rich taste and full body benefits of cocoa with no added sugar. CocoaVia 500mg Cocoa Flavanols Powder is powered by Cocoapro™, a proprietary cocoa flavanol that has been researched for over 30 years and has 60+ human clinical trials backing its use.* | | | | | | | | | | | Drop me your questions here.
