5 Steps to Perfect Sleep in a Tent
| | The amount of people that I know who have spent a fortune on fancy sleeping bags, and then skimp on the mattress and a pillow is absolutely astounding. I would argue they are even more important. For me, I bring a proper, memory foam pillow - not one of those blow up things. And a proper mattress, with insulation. Also, look for a double walled mattress - punctures suck. I am obviously biased towards CRUA mattresses and pillows, but, in the interest of being neutral, I also love Therm-a-Rest! And, the MondoKing 3D Sleeping Pad by them absolutely rocks.
| | | | |
Before I get into how CRUA can help you accomplish this (hint, hint!) there are other aids. - Make sure your tent has a good level of ventilation control
- If camping in hot climates, don't buy a dark-colored tent! Use mesh or breathable outer fly
- Opt for a heavy fly if in colder climates
- Use lots of layers so you can regulate your body temperature through the night
Then use CRUA's Culla and an appropriately temperature rated sleeping system. You can also add supplemental heat sources (make sure of proper use and adequate ventilation) such as the Little Buddy.
If you are like me, and you prefer not to have the heater on for too long or when sleeping, just blast it into the tent before you go to bed this makes it nice and toasty, especially with the Culla. Please read the instructions and make sure you have adequate ventilation. Fire - Have a nice fire lighting before bed, especially in the cooler season. This means you won't get too cold before bed. Blackbeard Fire has just the solution to make this a tad easier with their The Pirates Plunder- Fire Starter Kit.

3. Light and Noise Control
| | For a very low tech solution, get a sleeping mask and ear plugs. However, do invest in comfortable ones and, like everything, test them at home first. And, dare I repeat, a Culla…!? After all it is blocks out light and dampens sound.
| | | | |
Part of this, as we spoke about a couple of weeks ago, is finding the right spot to pitch. If you have a vehicle, then leveling blocks must be included. Trailers usually have jacks for this. If you're camping on uneven ground and there is no work around, camping beds with adjustable legs are now available, and you get off the hard ground. Just remember you'll still need an insulated mattress.
OK, this one is probably the most obvious of all the ways to get a better sleep in a tent. Get suitable bedding. A few things to look out for; check comfort vs. extreme rating, check care instructions - or at least that the liners or inserts are washable, mummy-shaped sleeping bags are better for keeping cold air out, but quilts might be a better option in hot climates, and finally, always check durability and customer reviews. Again, Therm-a-Rest make really good ones and the ParsecTM 32F/0C Sleeping Bag is one of my favorites.

| | 3. Dutch Oven OK, if you'll be driving to your actual camping pitch, then a Dutch Oven is a real luxury that's worth bringing. There's just something about the group eating from a DO at a campsite. Here's a really good Reddit thread that's worth reading on the subject. Check it out >>>

2. Shovel, Recovery Tracks and Jump Leads
The shovel can be used for a myriad of tasks, recovery tracks are handy when on the sand or in the wet, and jump leads, well, we are tempted to leave radios and chargers plugged in...

1. Comfortable Chairs Don't forget these please. Not cheap and flimsy. Google this and invest in a good set. I love my GCI lounger. Get One >>>
