The liver is a powerhouse organ in your body, responsible for over 500 vital functions. It plays a crucial role in detoxifying harmful substances, storing vitamins and minerals, aiding digestion, and regulating your metabolism. That's why maintaining your liver health is essential for overall well-being and longevity. Before we share a story of Dustin overcoming non-alcoholic fatty liver disease through cold plunging, here are some… Tips to Keep Your Liver Healthy - Maintain a Balanced Diet: Eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. The best liver superfoods to incorporate are garlic, leafy greens, beets, and carrots.
- Exercise Regularly: Engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity each week. This will help you manage your weight and reduce the risk of fatty liver disease.
- Limit Alcohol Consumption: Excessive alcohol intake can damage liver cells and lead to liver diseases like cirrhosis and alcoholic hepatitis. Shoot for no more than one drink a day for women and two drinks a day for men.
- Cold Plunging: Emerging research suggests that cold plunging can significantly benefit liver health by promoting the release of cold shock proteins. Let's take a deeper dive.
Cold Water Immersion & Cold Shock Proteins: A Dynamic Liver-Health Duo It's been shown that cold plunging activates cold shock proteins, a type of protein that cells produce in response to sudden drops in temperature. Here's the science breakdown: - Cold Shock Proteins (CSPs): Play crucial roles in cellular protection, repair, and overall homeostasis. CSPs helps cells adapt to and survive cold stress by:
-
- Stabilizing RNA – Preventing the decay of RNA (nucleic acid essential for most biological functions), which is essential for protein synthesis.
- Protecting Cellular Structures – Maintaining the integrity of cellular structures and hindering damage from cold stress.
- Promoting Protein Synthesis – Enhancing the translation of proteins that are crucial for cell survival and repair.
- Liver Benefits: They're almost too many to count! Primarily, CSPs can reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in the liver, reinforcing its ability to detoxify and perform other vital functions. They also…
- Improve Metabolism – By boosting the liver's ability to metabolize fats, CSPs shrink the risk of fatty liver disease with improved lipid processing and storage.
- Regulate Gene Expression – This regulation helps the liver maintain efficient functioning and adapt to changing conditions.
- Minimize Cell Death – CSPs can lower programmed cell death (apoptosis) in liver cells, aiding cell survival and amplifying the liver's ability to repair itself.
As you can see, cold water immersion and its activation of cold shock proteins is one of the single best habits you can form to preserve and promote your liver health. But if the science isn't enough, then listen to this real story written by a real Inergize Cold Plunge user.
"I didn't know it at the time but cold plunging had changed my life…when I had my blood work done again I was astonished at the results." - Dustin Young "My name is Dustin Young and last year in August of 2023 I was diagnosed with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. There are two numbers on labs that they look at for liver function "AST" and "ALT". My ALT had been slowly climbing for several years. July 2020 it was 49 and in August of 2023 it was 65. Normal range for ALT is 0-44. Then in August of 2023 my AST jumped to 44 and normal range is 0-40. At that point I was told I had non alcoholic fatty liver disease and was confirmed with a CT scan. With my numbers going up, my liver was having trouble functioning like it was supposed to. At my AST/ALT rate of growth, my liver health was in trouble. After doing my research, I came across cold plunging and its health benefits. The main benefit I noticed was how cold shock proteins are released. I knew I had to at least try it and see what it would do. I ordered from Inergize Cold Plunge Tub based on reviews and information [Ciaran] put on his website. I didn't know how well cold plunging would work but I had to give it a shot. I started in October of 2023 knowing I had to get my bloodwork done again in January of 2024. When I started plunging, my energy soared and I felt amazing.I didn't know it at the time, but cold plunging had changed my life. When I went back in January of 2024 and had my blood work done again I was astonished at the results. My ALT had dropped from 65 to 40, and my AST dropped from 44 to 28, which is the lowest in 3 years. Cold plunging helped my liver function get back into the normal range. I encourage anyone who is wondering whether to take the plunge...do it! Inergize Cold Plunge Tub changed my life and I couldn't be happier. -Dustin Young" | | | | |
