For best results, use these handle- and foot-making tools when the clay is not extremely wet or sticky. The clay tool blade should be clean and dry. Ideally, pull the extrusion up and out after it is sliced or fold back the sides of the slab so the extrusion pops up and out.

Drape the extrusion onto a Handle Form to create matching handles, or apply directly to your mug and adjust as you go.

Check out this quick YouTube guide for getting clean, consistent pulls — whether you're making handles, decorative feet, or other ceramic accents. These techniques will help you get the most out of your R207, R12, or any other R Series tool.

Start with clay that's firm, not sticky – let it sit 10–20 min before extruding.
Use a flat slab thicker than your desired handle.
Hold the tool at a low angle (~45°) and pull, don't push.
Use your forefinger on the handle to guide, not your thumb.
If your extrusion sticks, lift and fold the slab back like a hinge to release cleanly.

Handle Woes Be Gone!

Love this extruder for making handles that don't "suck". I was never thrilled with the handles I pulled or otherwise created and this made me dread handle making. I know Diamond Core is the well rated and the pinnacle of trimming tools, however it wasn't magic that earned them this excellent rating. They make tools that work, that make your potter life more enjoyable, and the tools hold up to heavy use.
