Firstly, a disclaimer! 😉 We're developing a new jacket (see bottom of email) so we're of course biased on this week's topic, which is: How to Pick a Jacket for the Outdoors? That said, outdoor jackets are a conundrum. They have now become more fashion than function, with the high street taking precedence over the backcountry. Most manufacturers have forgotten about what actually makes a good outdoors garment.

So, when picking a jacket for your roaming in the real great outdoors, what should you look for? Here are the most important factors to me: | | This is an easy one. Not pretend waterproof. And not shoddy. Waterproof material - HH or hydrostatic head is used a lot as a metric, but remember it doesn't have to be astronomical. 2000-3000mm is plenty in my experience, even for tents.
This is possible, and I think we're all now much more aware of the damage that these 'forever chemicals' do when used in waterproofing, with more and more big brands like Patagonia pledging to become PFC free. So please take this into account.
| | | | |
...with lots of vents. Good outdoor jackets can adapt. This means adapting to changes in weather. One of the most important things is to be able to allow airflow. Membranes such as GORE-TEX are used, but I think the jury is still out on their effectiveness. But you can make sure that there are lots of vents, in particular pit vents, with waterproof zips.
| | | | |
Another adaptability feature is the use of layering and layers. This means that the one jacket can be used in many different conditions. Living in 'four seasons in one day' Ireland means that this can be really crucial!
| | | | |
Waterproof and Protective Pockets | | Waterproof and protective pockets for devices. OK, they are a fact of life. Even in the Great Outdoors. And they are expensive. So keeping them dry, and safe is important. So I think it's important to have them. I said at the beginning that we're developing a new jacket. And I'd really love your help. As you may know, at CRUA we've always developed with our community. So your feedback would be sincerely appreciated. 2 things: | | - You can sign up here to receive weekly updates, which will polls on features you would like to see added. One last thing when choosing a jacket. Please take a look at the credentials of the brand, whoever it is. There is lots of 'greenwashing' happening, which I deplore. So do a quick check of their genuine efforts to do their bit for the world, and the natural world. Thanks as always, and I hope that you continue to get some value from our Newsletter.
